Why study nursing in Australia? The whole story.

7 July 2026 · Studyaway

Registered Nurse is one of Australia’s largest shortage occupations, and it sits on the skilled lists that give a genuine, independent pathway toward permanent residence. That much is true and widely advertised. Here is the whole story, including the parts that usually get skipped.

Why nursing genuinely stands out

Registered Nurse appears on the skilled occupation lists that matter. That means the occupation has an independent pathway toward permanent residence, not only an employer-dependent one. Few courses can say that.

The three ways in

Starting fresh? The Bachelor of Nursing (3 years) takes you from secondary schooling to Registered Nurse, with registration through AHPRA (Australia’s health practitioner regulator) when you graduate.

Already hold a degree, in any field? The Master of Nursing (2 years) is the faster conversion route to the same registration.

Already a nurse in your home country? You may not need a new degree at all. The IQNM route prepares internationally qualified nurses for AHPRA’s assessment. It takes months, not years. Ask us before you enrol in anything; this is the mistake we see most.

The Enrolled Nurse detail that gets skipped

A Diploma of Nursing makes you an Enrolled Nurse. That is real, paid healthcare work. But Enrolled Nurse is not on the independent-PR list. The diploma is a first step, not a destination: its value is the credit it gives you toward the Bachelor. If someone sells you the diploma as a PR pathway on its own, walk away.

What it takes

Nursing entry is genuinely demanding: registration-level English (higher than the visa minimum), clinical placements, and full-time commitment. The student visa itself needs first-year tuition plus AUD $29,710 in living funds (July 2026 figure). We show you the exact numbers for your situation before you spend anything. That is what the eligibility check is for.

General information only, current at July 2026, not migration advice. Occupation lists and requirements change; we verify against the live government sources before anything is lodged.
